Morris County prosecutor identifies man killed in Randolph house fire

The Morris County Prosecutor's Office has identified the 62-year-old resident killed in a Randolph house fire early Saturday morning.

Gregory Balbirnie, a resident of the single-family home at Cypress and Elm places, was found dead in the home. A previous report said the then-unidentified man was 69 years old.

The fire injured two others, a spokeswoman with the Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

Firefighters responded to the home, in a deep corner of Cypress and Elm places, shortly before 7:30 a.m., said Meghan Knab, of the Prosecutor's Office.

"The Randolph Fire Department was able to extract a male and female resident from the building and were transported to Saint Barnabas with serious injuries," Knab said. The investigation remains active, and no additional information was provided.

The Randolph police chief directed all inquiries to the Prosecutor's Office.

A neighbor, who declined to give a name, said due to the location of the house, firefighters had to stretch a water hose at least a quarter-mile to bring water from a hydrant on Carrell Road, which passes the neighborhood. A helicopter was seen landing at nearby Brundage Park.
