One dead, one injured after being hit by pickup on St. Petersburg’s Central Avenue

ST. PETERSBURG — A man is dead and a woman hospitalized with serious injuries after they were struck by a pickup truck Friday night while trying to cross Central Avenue, police say.

Robert Theodore Surprenant Jr., 60, and Darlene Marie Surpreant, 61, were crossing Central Avenue using the crosswalk in the 2000 block about 8:10 p.m., according to St. Petersburg police.

Then a Dodge Ram heavy duty pickup truck headed west on Central Avenue failed to stop and struck both, police say.

Both pedestrians were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg hospital for medical treatment. The man died from his injuries and the woman was reported to be in critical condition early Saturday.

The pickup driver, Michael William Parker, 50, remained at the scene of the crash and was cooperating with investigators, according to St. Petersburg police. Alcohol is not believed to have played a role in the crash. Police did not release any other information about the incident.
