One death, multiple injuries after motorist drives on wrong side of I-40 near Greensboro

One person is dead following a major collision on I-40 that State Highway Patrol believes was caused by a motorist driving in the wrong direction on the interstate.

Just after 5 p.m. Thursday, highway patrol responded to a crash involving multiple vehicles on I-40 westbound near NC 61 in Guilford County. Officials say McLeansville resident Pearlie Mae Williams, 69, was heading east in I-40's westbound lane and struck Greensboro man Jose Gonzalez, 31. The head-on collision resulted in a chain reaction that included five more vehicles.

Williams died on the scene. According to Greensboro police. She was reported missing from her home earlier that day.

Gonzalez, who was traveling with his mother and son, was seriously injured but is in stable condition, said troopers. Gonzalez' son was also seriously injured, while his mother sustained minor injuries. All three are receiving treatment at a Greensboro hospital.

Other motorists involved in the accident reported no injuries, noted authorities.

Authorities closed westbound I-40 lanes for four hours following the investigation.
