MORICHES – Oriskany used one big inning Saturday to beat Argyle and earn a spot in the state’s Class D softball championship game at the Moriches Athletic Complex.

They (19-3) play again Saturday afternoon against Deposit/Hancock.

Oriskany trailed 3-0 into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Redskins rallied to score seven runs on their way to an 8-3 victory, their 14th in a row since the start of May.

“We have to play our game,” said Oriskany coach Mike Reilly, repeating a recurring mantra throughout the postseason for the Redskins.

Kaylen Buehler followed a pair of hits to start the fourth with a triple to drive home the team’s first two runs. A bunt for a hit and a catcher’s interference call loaded the bases before Jordyn Carlo walked to force another run home. Ashley Reid singled with the bases still loaded and Megan Wright cleared the bases with a triple.

Wright singled home another run for the Division III champions in the sixth inning. Oriskany had stranded runners in scoring position in the first and third innings before breaking through in the fourth.

Pitcher Maddy Eldred homered in the second inning for Argyle’s Scots, champions of Section II. The Scots added two runs in the third inning and Oriskany pitcher Juliet Tagliaferri shut them down from there.

The Redskins’ game finished first allowing the coaches and players to peek at the conclusion of Section IV Deposit/Hancock’s 7-2 win over Section V Scio/Friendship. The game was tied at 2 until the fifth inning when Deposit/Hancock scored three runs and took its first lead. The Eagles added two runs in the sixth.

“We saw a couple innings,” Reilly said. “They looked like what we expected them to look like.”

Deposit/Hancock won the state title in 2019, the last time the tournament was played.
