One driver charged after head-on Route 50 crash that seriously injured other motorist

A motorist is charged with driving while impaired by alcohol and more in a head-on Route 50 crash that seriously injured the other driver. Here's what we know so far.

What happened in the Route 50 crash

On Tuesday, Oct. 10, at about 7:23 p.m., officers of the Salisbury Police Department responded to the area of Route 50 and Hobbs Road to investigate several reports of a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.

While traveling to the scene, officers were notified of a head-on collision that occurred within the same area between two vehicles. Upon arrival, officers observed two vehicles that had been involved in a collision, each with damage consistent of having been struck head on.

The investigation conducted by members of the Salisbury Police Department revealed that a vehicle being operated by 30-year-old Gelmer Navaro-Chavez was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided head on with another vehicle being operated by a 38-year-old male driver. Upon officers’ arrival, Chavez was located standing outside of his vehicle, while the other driver was entrapped within the vehicle he was operating.

The charges filed in Route 50 head-on crash

Members of the Salisbury Fire Department and Pittsville Fire Department were successful in extracting the other driver, who was ultimately transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore by the Maryland State Police Aviation Unit.

Chavez was transported to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional, released, and shortly thereafter placed under arrest and charged with driving while impaired by alcohol, suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to obey traffic control device, reckless driving, failure to control speed to avoid collision, driving wrong way.

The other driver remains under medical care and his condition is considered critical but stable.
