One driver killed, another hurt when cars crash on South Carolina road, cops say

One driver was killed and another was injured Tuesday in a crash on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:40 a.m. in Orangeburg County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.

A 2016 Nissan Altima was driving east on Coach Road when it collided with a westbound 2011 Ford Mustang near the intersection with Salisbury Road, according to Glover.

The Mustang driver died at the scene and the Altima driver was taken to an area hospital, Glover said. Further information on the Altima driver’s condition was not available.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Mustang driver.

Glover said the drivers were the only occupants in the cars and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the cars to collide was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 298 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 15 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 46 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
