Yesterday, Princess Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a surprise ceremony in Windsor, which included just 20 guests. Despite the unusual backdrop for the wedding—namely, a pandemic—the Princess maintained some elements of a traditional ceremony, including the addition of jaw-dropping floral arrangements.

The wedding bouquet has been a standout feature among royal brides over the years. For her own version, Princess Beatrice chose an arrangement filled with trailing jasmine, pale pink and cream sweet peas, royal porcelain ivory spray roses, pink o’hara garden roses, pink wax flower and baby pink astilbe. The bouquet even matched the floral archway constructed at the chapel door in honor of the big day.

The princess also included sprigs of myrtle in her bouquet, a royal tradition that dates back to the 1858 wedding bouquet of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s eldest daughter, also named Victoria. Myrtle has become the emblem of matrimony within bridal bouquets and a sprig was included in the bouquets of Princess Eugenie, Duchess Kate, and even Queen Elizabeth.

This bouquet was designed by Patrice Van Helden, co-owner of RVH Floral Design. RVH is no stranger to royal weddings, as they also crafted the flowers for Princess Eugenie's big day.

After her ceremony, Princess Beatrice followed another royal wedding tradition: sending her bouquet to the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey. This generations-old practice first began with Lady Elizabeth Bowles Lyon, who would later become the Queen Mother. After her 1923 wedding to the future King George VI, the bride laid her bouquet on the tomb as a tribute to her brother Fergus, who was killed during World War I. Royal brides have since followed suit in this touching gesture.

Beatrice did veer from tradition in one way by including color in her bouquet. In the recent past, many royal brides have opted for all-white bouquets. Notably, Duchess Kate, Duchess Meghan, and Princess Eugenie all chose a monochrome look for their bridal bouquets. In choosing a mostly pink arrangement, Beatrice's bouquet makes something of a statement. Perhaps, though, the princess was inspired by her mother, Sarah Ferguson, who included yellow flowers in her bridal bouquet.
