One Hillsborough community group to hold first open meeting on Jan. 20

HILLSBOROUGH - One Hillsborough, a new cross-cultural community advocacy coalition organized in collaboration with the township, will hold its first meeting later this month.

All residents are invited to attend the 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 20 meeting at the municipal building. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Hillsborough Education Association Pride Committee. No registration is required.

The meeting has been billed by organizers as a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.

One Hillsborough's goal is to promote communication with all community services providers and organizations without the boundaries of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, or political affiliation. The organization wants to provide forums and channels for Hillsborough residents, particularly those from underrepresented and unheard groups.

The Jan. 20 meeting will focus on the common thread of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging for all township residents.

The first four topics to be addressed are government, public safety, education and community involvement. The discussion will include township leaders as well as interactive dialogue on those issues.

Discussion groups by topic will be co-facilitated by the Hillsborough High School Student Diversity Initiative and residents, teachers and community representatives involved with One Hillsborough.

According to One Hillsborough's website, the organization got its start in 2018 when a group began meeting for breakfast and started talking about how to improve the township's sense of community.

The small group has grown into a diverse cross-cultural organization of 75 to 100 people.

The original name of Hillsborough Commons changed to One Hillsborough to better reflect the organization's goal of strengthening the township's social fabric, facilitate a dialogue on issues and make township officials and the police department aware of those issues and tensions in the community.

The goal, as Rev. Rod Williams told the school board Jan. 5, is to ensure that "Hillsborough is, advertised, the best place to live."
