One infant strangled to death, another bruised — and 2.2M swings and rockers recalled
In another safety recall involving a baby fatality and products designed to hold infants, 4moms recalled 2,060,000 MamaRoo swings and 270,000 RockaRoo rockers sold in the United States and Canada.
The problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “When the swing or rocker is not in use, their restraint straps can dangle below the seat and non-occupant crawling infants can become entangled in the straps, posing a strangulation hazard.”
The alert says 4moms knows of two times this happened with infants crawling under the seat, both 10-month-old children. One died from asphyxiation, and the other got a bruised neck before a caregiver removed him.
This covers MamaRoo swings that use a three-point harness —1.0 and 2.0, model Nos. 4M-005; 3.0, model No. 1026; and 4.0, model No. 1037 — and RockaRoo rocker model No. 4M-012. They were sold at BuyBuy Baby and Target brick-and-mortar stores and online through Amazon.

“Families put their trust in our company when they choose to bring our products into their homes,” an emailed statement from 4moms CEO Gary Waters said. “That’s why we take every precaution and make the extra effort to ensure that our baby gear products not only meet but exceed all applicable safety standards.
“We are deeply saddened by the two incidents that occurred when babies crawled under the seat of unoccupied MamaRoo swings. After investigating the circumstances behind these two reported incidents, 4moms decided to conduct a voluntary recall in partnership with the CPSC.”
