All but one Kansas City area Steak ‘n Shakes are for sale or lease. Will they close?

How much longer will Steak ‘n Shake sell its Oreo shakes and burger meals in the Kansas City metro?

The answer is unclear — all but one of the area’s Steak ‘n Shakes are listed for sale or lease.

The burger restaurants in Gladstone at 4929 N.W. Old Pike Road, and Olathe at 12209 S. Strang Line Road are advertised on real estate company The Block’s website. The former Independence location at 13621 E. 40 Highway is now under contract with another business, said Block Realtor Mark McConahay.

Only the 9500 N.E. Barry Road spot is not for sale or lease.

Both the Olathe and Gladstone locations advertise “potential for redevelopment” on the website. “Existing operator will close before closing,” the listing reads.

McConahay said he listed four Steak ‘n Shake locations three years ago, including one in Raymore at 1905 W. Foxwood Drive. He would not comment on whether the locations had closing dates.

This summer, an Overland Park Steak ‘n Shake at 7510 W. 63rd St. closed after decades in business.

McConahay said franchise owner Paul Ledgard is facing “serious health problems.”

Ledgard did not respond to The Star’s attempts to contact him.

The Illinois-based chain was founded in 1934 and is known for steak burgers and Frisco melts.

In 2020, Steak ‘n Shake announced it would shutter 57 locations across the country.
