2 killed in separate crashes in Volusia County

A 18-year-old Melbourne man and a 93-year-old DeLand woman died in separate traffic crashes in Volusia County hours apart on Tuesday, Florida Highway Patrol investigators said.

Both crashes are under investigation, troopers said.

The first crash that claimed the life of the Melbourne man occurred on Interstate 95 near Edgewater, troopers said.

Dispatchers said the crash was reported at 3:47 p.m.

According to FHP Lt. Tara Crescenzi, a 2005 Ford Escape driven by the Melbourne man was traveling north on I-95 when for unknown reasons it ran off the road and struck several trees in the woodline.

The driver of the SUV was partially ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene of the crash, Crescenzi said.

The second fatal crash on Tuesday occurred at 6:21 p.m. near DeLand and a 93-year-old DeLand woman died in the crash, troopers said.

The crash occurred on South Adelle Avenue and West Beresford Road near DeLand, Crescenzi said.

The crash involved a 2006 Jeep Liberty and a 2018 Ford Transit van, troopers said.

According to Crescenzi, the Jeep Liberty was headed south on South Adelle Avenue when it failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection, hitting a Ford Transit van that was eastbound on Beresford Road.

The front of the Jeep Liberty struck the left side of the van causing it to run off the road and hit a traffic sign and power pole, Crescenzi said.

The driver of the Jeep Liberty, a 29-year-old woman from DeLand was taken to AdventHealth DeLand with minor injuries. The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man from DeLand suffered serious injuries and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Crescenzi said.

The 93-year-old woman killed in the crash was a passenger in the Ford Transit van, Crescenzi said.
