One person died in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and car Thursday evening in Carson County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, at about 6:52 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, a 2016 Mack truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was southbound on State Highway 207, approximately nine miles south of Panhandle, while a 2009 Lincoln Town Car SD was northbound.

DPS said the Lincoln failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and attempted to turn left onto the Interstate 40 service road in the path of the semi. The driver of the semi, identified as Michael Britten, 65, of Groom, tried to avoid the Lincoln by swerving and braking, but he could not prevent the collision. The semi "made a frontal impact" with the Lincoln’s passenger side, forcing both vehicles off the roadway.

The semi ended up facing south, upright in the ditch west of Hwy. 207. The Lincoln reached final rest on its left side, facing west, underneath the semi.

The driver of the Lincoln, identified as Cyrys Wingate, 70, of Hernando, Mississippi, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carson County Justice of the Peace Jean Hardeman.

Britten was not injured, DPS said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The posted speed limit was 50 mph, and road conditions were dry and clear. The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
