One killed, five injured after SUV strikes dump truck near Woonsocket, Highway Patrol says

Aug. 5—WOONSOCKET, S.D. — One person died and five others were injured Thursday afternoon after an SUV struck a dump truck near Woonsocket.

Shortly before 4:15 p.m. Thursday, authorities in Jerauld County were called to the intersection of 393rd Avenue and 230th Street, roughly six miles southwest of Woonsocket, for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Preliminary crash information released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that a 2015 Toyota Rav4, occupied by five people, was traveling westbound on 230th Street when the driver failed to yield for a yield sign.

In the intersection, the SUV collided with a 2003 Sterling Dump Truck that was southbound on 393rd Avenue.

As a result of the crash, the dump truck went into the west ditch and rolled.

A 70-year-old female passenger in the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 72-year-old male driver of the Toyota sustained life-threatening injuries. Three juvenile passengers of the Toyota — a 2-year-old and 13-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy — all sustained minor injuries. The 45-year-old male driver of the dump truck suffered minor injuries, as well.

All six occupants across both vehicles were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Names of the six people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
