One killed Friday morning after semi strikes SUV in Hermosa

Aug. 28—HERMOSA, S.D. — One man was killed Friday morning after a semi struck and SUV within the city of Hermosa.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday, authorities in Custer County were called to mile marker 60 of South Dakota Highway 79, within the city limits of Hermosa, for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Preliminary crash information released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that a 2016 Dodge Journey was northbound on S.D. 79 when the driver attempted to turn into a parking lot. The Dodge turned into the path of a southbound 2016 Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer, and the vehicles collided.

The 80-year-old driver of the Dodge was transported by ambulance to a Rapid City hospital where he later died.

The 29-year-old semi-truck driver was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Names of the two people involved have not yet been released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
