One killed in second head-on collision in Davidson County in a week

A 72-year-old man was killed in Southmont on Wednesday in the second fatal head-on collision in Davidson County in less than a week.

According to Trooper Ned Moultrie with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 officers responded to a report of an accident on Jersey Church Road near Hugh Miller Road in Southmont.

Moultrie said there was a 2020 Ford SUV traveling westbound and the driver went left of center and struck a 1987 Dodge SUV traveling the opposite direction in a head-on collision.

The driver of the Dodge sustained fatal injuries and died on the scene. He was identified as Larry Stephen Sipes, 72, of Lexington.

The driver of the Ford SUV, identified as Lorene Bowers Kennel, 68, of Lexington was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with serious injuries. Moultrie said Kennel has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and traveling left of center.

This was the second fatal head-on collision in Davidson County within six days.

On Jan. 6, a Toyota 4 Runner SUV was traveling South on Highway 109 in Silver Valley when the driver went left of center and collided head-on with an oncoming Chrysler passenger vehicle. After the impact, the Chrysler traveled off the road to the right, overturned and caught fire.

A woman, Brittany Carter, 38, and her two children, Ayden Palmer, 12, and Lincoln Palmer, 7, died at the scene of the accident.
