Woman killed in crash on SC road that hurt seven other people identified by coroner

One person died days after a pickup truck and car crashed on a Midlands road in a wreck where seven other people were injured, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Mary Karsyn Vonegidy, a 27-year-old Marshville, North Carolina resident, was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey and then transferred to Prisma Health Richland where she died on April 20, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said Sunday.

The two-vehicle collision happened April 15 in Sumter County, but the death wasn’t reported until a week later on Saturday, said Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.

At about 11:35 a.m., a 2007 Ford pickup with five people on board, was driving east on Myrtle Beach Highway, according to Tidwell. At an intersection, the pickup collided with a Toyota that was driving south on S.C. 527, Tidwell said.

The Toyota then ran off the right side of the road and hit a stop sign, according to Tidwell.

There were three people in the Toyota and all of them, along with all the occupants of Ford, were taken to area hospitals, Tidwell said. A passenger from the Toyota was the victim who died, according to Tidwell.

An autopsy was completed Saturday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Further information on the conditions of the seven surviving victims was not available.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. There was no word if either of the drivers will face any criminal charges.
