Columbus police continue to investigate a shootout Saturday afternoon that left one dead and one wounded outside a Dairy Queen on the city's Northeast Side.

Police responded around 2:20 p.m. Saturday to the Dairy Queen, 1519 Schrock Road, just west of the Karl Road intersection, on reports of a shooting.

Responding officers found Nathaniel Joe-Summerall, 19, with a gunshot wound, according to police.

Columbus Division of Fire medics pronounced Joe-Summerall dead at the scene shortly at 2:32 p.m.

Soon after that, a second adult who had also been shot in the incident arrived at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, according to police, who have not identified that individual.

Homicide detectives say their preliminary investigation has determined that several males, including Joe-Summerall and the second gunshot victim, had gathered in the Dairy Queen parking lot in what seems to have been a planned meeting. Soon after they met up, police said, a fight broke out and gunfire was then exchanged.

Radio traffic from police officers on the scene indicated they were looking for at least two possible suspects who may have run from the area on foot.

Just after 4 p.m. Saturday, a crowd had gathered outside the Brookeville Apartment Homes, across Schrock Road from the scene. Police closed that section of Schrock Road.

In addition, art of the intersection of Schrock and Karl roads was closed with crime scene tape after detectives found possible evidence there.

Police do not think the victims were employees of the restaurant.

Family members of Joe-Summerall were at the scene while homicide detectives and crime scene technicians pored over the area for evidence, but declined to speak with reporters.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Columbus police homicide detectives at 614-645-4730 or can anonymously call Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.
