One killed in single-vehicle crash in Newton, police say

One person has died following a single-vehicle crash Thursday evening, according to the Newton Police Department.

Just before 6:45 p.m., police said a pick-up truck was traveling southbound on Northwest Boulevard when it ran off the left side of the roadway, jumped the curb, and became airborne. The truck then went through a fence and a yard before landing in some trees.

The driver of the vehicle, 69-year-old Robert Lewis Abernathy, died at the scene, according to police.

An investigation revealed that Abernathy may have had a medical emergency episode which may have caused him to lose control of the vehicle and crash.
