One killed, two injured in police chase crash in Port Allen

PORT ALLEN, La. (BRPROUD) — At least one person was killed and two others injured after a police chase that led to a crash Saturday night.

According to Louisiana State Police, after 8 p.m. Saturday, troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of LA Highway 1 and LA Highway 3237.

Before thoroughly investigating, troopers learned Jonathan K. Williams, 34, of Plaquemine, was headed north on LA 1 in a Chevrolet Tahoe.

During the investigation, state police said officers with the Plaquemine Police Department attempted to stop Williams but he refused and started driving recklessly at high speeds to evade officers.

As Williams approached the intersection of LA 3237, a Dodge Ram was headed west on LA 3237 and making a left turn onto LA 1. Williams continued through the red light, striking the rear of the Dodge Ram. The Ram began to spin, veered off the roadway and overturned, police say.

Troopers say Williams was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in Williams’ vehicle was also not wearing a seatbelt but sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The driver and passenger of the Ram were both wearing seatbelts but only the passenger sustained moderate injuries.

Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis.

This is an ongoing investigation.
