One killed in wrong-way collision on Highway 180 in Fresno. DUI suspected, CHP says
One person was killed early Saturday morning and one was taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 180 in Fresno.
After getting reports of a wrong-way DUI driver on the highway, the CHP said the collision happened at 12:25 a.m. on the 180 east of Armstrong Avenue.
CHP spokesman Mike Salas said a Honda Accord driven by a 30-year-old Fresno man was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Highway 180 when he struck a Buick Enclave that was going west into the path of the Honda.
The Honda driver was attempting to make a U-turn to correct his wrong-way travel and turned left directly into the path of the Buick, Salas said.
The Buick struck the Honda on the passenger side. A passenger in the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two people in the Buick weren’t taken to the hospital and sought their own medical attention, Salas said.
The driver of the Honda — identified by CHP as Vikash Kumar — was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He’s expected to be charged with felony vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol, Salas said.
Westbound 180 was shut down between Temperance and Fowler avenues for two hours as officers investigated.
