One Longhorn listed on The Athletic’s midseason freshman All-America team

Freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been the most welcomed surprise to Texas’ offense this season.

While rumblings out of fall camp consistently stated that Worthy would compete for a starting role immediately, no one could have expected him to exceed expectations like he has.

Although he recorded 100 receiving yards against Texas Tech in Week 4, Worthy had his breakout performance against Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown. The speedster brought in nine receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns.

The Athletic released their midseason freshman All-America team this week and Worthy was deservingly included. Through the first seven games of the season, the former four-star prospect has compiled 542 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

What The Athletic Says…

The true freshman from Fresno, Calif., came in with a ton of hype and has exceeded expectations. Worthy is currently the Big 12’s leading receiver with 542 yards and six touchdowns on 29 receptions. He was absolutely electric in his Red River debut with nine catches for 261 yards and two scores against Oklahoma, starting with a bubble screen that he turned into a 75-yard touchdown on the first play of the game. The top-100 recruit signed with Michigan but had a change of heart and enrolled at Texas, where he’s shining in Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

If Texas hopes to run the table and have any shot at reaching the Big 12 championship game, they will need to continue to find a way to get the ball in the speedy playmakers hands.
