  • American Idol season 16 winner Maddie Poppe is reportedly not pleased with the show's lack of support for her new album, Whirlwind.

  • According to Variety, Maddie was also apparently told that the American Idol finale was "already booked" when she asked if she could perform her single for the show.

  • Now, fans are weighing in on the controversy after Maddie posted on social media about it.

So, um, things might be pretty awkward at the American Idol season 17 finale on Sunday night. In case you missed it, Variety has picked up on some low-key drama going on between last year's champion Maddie Poppe and the ABC singing show. And now, it looks like fans are weighing in on social media.

While Maddie has said on Twitter that there's "much more to the story here," tension between the Idol winner and the show allegedly stemmed from this year's Disney night. Maddie, along with her boyfriend and season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson, sang a duet for the evening. But when the show didn't mention Maddie's upcoming album Whirlwind (which is set to drop May 17, btw), she reportedly got upset - especially since she was under the impression that Idol would be helping promote it.

To vent her frustration, she hopped on Twitter and said, "Was waiting for ‘ALSO from last week, our Season 16 winner has an album coming out May 17th.'” Idol, however, apparently claimed that the program ran out of time to throw the line in.

All of that drama is not made better by the fact that Maddie was also allegedly told that the three-hour finale was "already booked" and that there wasn't a slot for her to sing her single "Made You Miss." This is another stinger, especially considering that it's fairly standard to see past winners perform on finale night. With all that being said though, Maddie will reportedly be a part of the finale in some capacity, according to an Idol rep.

Got all that? Now, given that complicated background, it's understandable why Maddie's recent social media post is prompting fans to throw shade at American Idol. In it, Maddie is posing with Caleb, presumably after singing the national anthem for the Los Angeles Dodgers' baseball game.

"Great big THANK YOU to the @dodgers for having me sing the anthem tonight!! And so cool of them to give my album a great big shoutout as well!!! Such a cool experience," she wrote.

On Instagram and Twitter, folks who knew how mad Maddie was that the show didn't plug her album instantly drew the connection. "See? You don't need @AmericanIdol #truestar," one fan wrote. "When the LA Dodgers support the American Idol Winner better than @AmericanIdol does," another tweeted. Several more mentioned Idol on Instagram and Twitter, with one even saying, "@AmericanIdol take notes, sweetie."

While it remains unclear how Maddie will appear on the final show of the season, the Idol finale is sure to be an exciting one this Sunday. For it, former winner Carrie Underwood will take the stage, as will runner-up and current Queen frontman Adam Lambert. Fans can also expect to see some great performances from judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. Needless to say, the three finalists up for the title - Alejandro Aranda, Madison VanDenburg, and Laine Hardy - will sing their hearts out.
