Here Is One Major Reason Milford Is So Special

Milford Patch spoke with Mayor Ben Blake about some of the secrets to the city's success.

Milford is continually ranked among the best places to live for families with children and the city has previously received national attention for its efforts. I wanted to find out what makes Milford such a great place for young families and I spoke this week with Mayor Ben Blake.

Blake told Patch that Milford is such a destination for young families because of all of the activities and sports it has to offer. "Children are what gives a community a lot of energy," the Mayor said.

Blake knows all about children having three of his own. Blake took me through his personal calendar for the upcoming weekend and let's just say he's busy. There's his son's t-ball game, which is the same day U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy visits.

Then Blake is off to a football practice for another child at the new Orange Avenue fields and his daughter is participating in gymnastics. Then there is a carnival at St. Mary's this weekend which includes fireworks.

On Sunday is the Milford Prevention Council's Super Heroes Costume Fun Run.

"Next weekend looks even busier," Blake said.

How Did Milford Families Get So Busy On Weekends?

It began a decade ago when the city installed a skate park at Washington Field. This year it went to another new level with the addition of the popular splash pad at Eisenhower Park, which kept kids cool during this insane summer heat.

Pickleball courts were also added at Eisenhower. A year ago the city added two new multi-use fields at Orange Avenue because of a demand for more space for youth sports.

But Blake said there is still a lot more Milford has to offer. He said Walnut Beach and the entire surrounding community is thriving. The beaches were packed all summer.

"There's just a lot of energy in Milford," Blake said. "There's just a lot of events and concerts down at Walnut Beach. There's things going on all the time throughout Milford."
