An Ankeny man has died after being shot at his apartment; his roommate is charged with manslaughter

An Ankeny man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after his roommate died following a Tuesday night shooting.

John T. Peak, 24, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his roommate Eli Reed, 21. Reed died Wednesday night, according to a news release.

Peak was previously charged with reckless use of a firearm and released on bond. According to the release, Ankeny police are working with Peak's attorney so Peak can turn himself in.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 1100 block of Southwest 28th Street at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Ankeny Police Sgt. Corey Schneden said. They found Reed with a gunshot wound to the head, and he was transported to a Des Moines hospital with what authorities said were life-threatening injuries.

Police say Peak fired the weapon when he was allegedly intoxicated and handling the loaded 9mm pistol "in a reckless manner," according to a criminal complaint, which went on to say he pulled the trigger and fired a shot that struck his roommate in the face.
