Are you one of more than 3,200 North Carolinians owed $2.5M in wages?

More than $2.53 million in back wages is owed to 3,207 North Carolina workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Durham County and the town of Durham have the highest amount in back wages owed to employees from various businesses. According to the data, 248 employees are owed $810,843 in back wages.

The next on the list is Wilson County, with 351 workers from various businesses owed $324,886. Of those owed, the businesses in the town of Wilson owe 68 employees $139,657, and in Stantonsburg 283 workers are owed $185,238.

Rounding out the remaining top five counties in the state are Wake with 417 employees owed $317,994; Mecklenburg County and Charlotte each with 247 employees owed $138,320, and Sampson County with 340 employees owed $111,468.

Cumberland and surrounding counties

In Cumberland County, 49 employees are owed $12,879 in wages from various businesses, of which 45 in Fayetteville are owed $8,011.

Bladen County and Bladenboro each have eight employees owed $512.

Robeson County has 77 employees owed $20,396, of which 29 in Lumberton are owed $6,092; 14 employees in Pembroke are owed $3,168; six in Fairmont are owed $654; four in Red Springs are owed $918 and two in Maxton are owed $1,876.

Hoke County and Raeford each have five employees owed $408, and in Harnett County, three employees are owed $3,349, the data shows.

In Moore County, one employee is owed $410.

The data shows that even four workers from businesses on Fort Liberty are owed $4,867.

People who think they may be owed back wages can search by business name or worker name in the U.S. Department of Labor database maintained by the Wages and Hours Division.
