One orthopedic surgeon. Hundreds of lawsuits. Inside our investigation.

Good morning,

Earlier this year, reporter Katherine Lewin heard about hundreds of lawsuits filed against orthopedic surgeon Richard David Heekin, his clinic and St. Vincent's Riverside Hospital.

Since then, Katherine has spent months going through records, learning about medical malpractice and talking to Heekin's former patients.

We wanted to understand what patients said happened, but we also wanted to know when hospital leaders knew about some of the concerns.

This week, we bring you the project based on Katherine's work: Patients, colleagues complained about orthopedic surgeon at St. Vincent's. Why didn't the surgeries stop sooner?

And more of the stories of several patients can be found here.

Katherine also describes in detail how she reported the story here.

Reporter David Bauerlein this week explained that we could soon see a 44-story apartment tower in downtown Jacksonville with help from $36 million city incentives.

The tower, proposed by American Lions based in New York, would go on the former Jacksonville Landing site.

Columnist Nate Monroe weighed in this week with what he knows about Jax Chamber CEO Daniel Davis, who has officially kicked off his campaign for Jacksonville mayor, and what we might hear about him during the race.

You can read Nate's take here: Can Daniel Davis, charmed scion of the political establishment, be beaten?

Reporter Matt Soergel tells another beautiful story of a veteran, a Jacksonville woman's father.

Diane Halstead's father, Henry Eugene Maul, was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II, but it's not something the family discussed a lot.

But now Halstead is sharing some of her father's story as he told it in a diary he kept and she found after her parents had passed away. She's even written a book.

You can read more in Matt's story: With diary revealed, Jacksonville woman tells of reticent father's life as a POW in Germany.

Looking for a new place to visit for a sweet treat? Reporter Teresa Stepzinski has you covered with a new specialty shop in Ponte Vedra Beach.

And you won't want to miss the photos from photographer Bob Self. You can find it all here: The Dolly Llama Waffle Master artisan waffles and ice cream shop opens in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Finally, we have a new feature on our website for subscribers. In many of our stories that are behind a paywall, you can now listen as the story is read to you. If the story offers the audio version, you'll find a "Hear the Story" button at the top of the story under the journalist's byline. Pronunciation isn't perfect, but it's a good option for those who'd prefer an audio version rather than traditional text.

Thank you for supporting local journalism.

Have a great week,
