One person dead, another airlifted after crash on Route 31

A 73-year-old Verona man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening, according to a release from the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the crash on Route 31 at Kelly Avenue around 5:30 p.m. in Verona. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies responded to the crash around 5:30 p.m. in Verona, where an investigation revealed Frederick Rissman was attempting to turn his sedan east onto Route 31 from Kelly Avenue when he failed to yield the right of way to pickup driven by 65-year-old Gary Cronk of Oneida, who'd been traveling west on Route 31, the release said.

Rissman was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. Cronk was treated at the scene by the Verona Fire department. Rissman's two passengers were both hospitalized; 55-year-old Jean Rissman of Verona was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for serious injuries, while 26-year-old Daniel Perez of Elmhurst was taken to the St. Elizabeth campus of Mohawk Valley Health Systems for non-life threatening injuries, the release said.

The road was closed from Germany Road to Main Street as deputies investigated the accident, an earlier release said. It reopened to traffic just before 10 p.m. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's criminal investigations and forensic units.
