Six-year-old boy dies in Orleans house fire

ORLEANS − A six-year-old boy died after suffering injuries in a Saturday night fire at a home on Route 6A, according State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey.

The Fire Department received reports of a fire at a house at 177 Route 6A at 8:40 p.m. When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the two-and-a-half-story home and learned one person was missing.

Orleans Fire Chief George E. Deering IV ordered a second alarm, bringing mutual aid from other communities, and firefighters immediately entered the house to search.

"They located one seriously injured person, who was taken to an area hospital. That person later succumbed to their injuries," reads a press release issued by the State Fire Marshal. He later confirmed that person was a six-year-old boy. Authorities did not release the boy's name.

Four other people inside the house were taken from the scene for medical care. One Orleans police officer was evaluated and released.

Firefighters contained the fire to the unit where it started and the flames were extinguished in about 20 minutes.

While the fire is not suspicious, the exact cause remains under joint investigation by the Orleans Fire Department, Orleans Police Department, and State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office and Cape & Islands District Attorney’s office.
