One person dead, one arrested after fight outside west Wichita nightclub, police say

One person is dead and another arrested after a scuffle early Wednesday morning in the parking lot of a west Wichita nightclub, according to Wichita police spokesperson Trevor Macy.

Just before 2 a.m., police responded to an assault call at Blu night club, near the corner of Maple and Tyler.

A manager told first responders that a man who got into a fight in the parking lot wasn’t breathing, according to 911 scanner traffic around the time of the incident.

First responders found Stephen Long unresponsive with a head injury. The 50-year-old from Seguin, Texas, died at the scene.

Long was leaving the bar when he got into an argument in the parking lot, Macy said in a news release. He was shoved and fell backward, hitting his head.

Police arrested Christopher Parish, 34, of Wichita on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. Parish was at the scene when officers arrived.

Wichita has had three homicides in a few days, including another one at a bar. Alonzo Haywood, 31, died Sunday after he was punched during a fight early Friday at Mulligan’s Pub in north Wichita, police said. Additionally, a mass shooting in September at Enigma Club & Lounge in Old Town left one person dead and several wounded.

This would be the 52nd homicide in Wichita this year. There were 53 through the same time last year, which ended up being a record year for homicides.
