One person dies in crash during snowstorm on Dan Ryan Expressway early Saturday, state police say

A Maywood woman is dead following a car crash on the Dan Ryan Expresswayon the city’s South Side Saturday morning, according to Illinois State Police.

Around 1 a.m., state police responded to a one-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of Dan Ryan near 75th Street in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said. The driver of a Chevrolet Equinox attempted to exit at 75th Street but lost control before falling off the right side of the road and striking a light pole at the top of the right embankment. No one else was in the car at the time of the crash, police said.

The driver, identified as Davina Thomas, 35, of Maywood, by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, was pronounced dead on scene.

According to the National Weather Service, around the time of the crash there was a combination of falling and blowing snow. More than five inches of snow fell overnight in parts of Cook County.

It was not immediately known whether the accident was weather-related.

The southbound lanes of I-94 were closed near 71st Street for investigation and reopened shortly before 5 a.m.
