One person dies in small plane crash near Lake Tahoe, El Dorado Sheriff’s Office says

One person died and another suffered major injuries Tuesday afternoon when a small plane they were in crashed in the South Lake Tahoe Basin, authorities reported.

The plane crash was reported about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in the small town of Meyers, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.

Deputies arrived and found a single-engine plane crumpled and upside down in a wooded area, Sgt. Simon Brown said in the release.

He said there were two people on board the plane and one of them died. The other person was taken to a Reno hospital, according to Brown. Sheriff’s officials did not have any further information on the injured person’s condition.

The California Highway Patrol in South Lake Tahoe, which assisted at the crash site, reported that the person injured in the crash suffered major injuries. The CHP said the the plane crashed near Rainbow Road and Highway 89, a few miles south of Lake Tahoe.

The Sheriff’s Office was communicating with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, who will be investigating the cause of the crash.

The names of those on board the plane will be released once their identities have been confirmed and their families have been properly notified, sheriff’s officials said.
