EVANSVILLE – One person was killed and another seriously injured after a wrong-way driver reportedly caused a head-on collision on U.S. 41 early Friday morning, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's office said.

The driver who died on scene was Larry Pennell, 43, of Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, according to Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, two vehicles collided around 3:25 a.m., near U.S. 41 and Baseline Road. One driver was determined to be dead after deputies arrived on scene. The other was taken to an emergency room for treatment for serious injuries, as well as toxicology tests.

One of the vehicles reportedly matched an alert deputies received earlier in the morning about a motorist traveling north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 41.

"This (alert) was received about one minute prior to central dispatch receiving information that a crash had just occurred," the release states.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office is investigating the collision.
