One person killed, five injured in Merced County collision near Delhi, CHP says

One person is dead and five others suffered major injuries in a two-vehicle collision at a Merced County intersection, just north of Delhi on Tuesday, according to the CHP.

At 8:24 a.m. CHP responded to the area of North Vincent Road and West Harding Road, according to CHP Officer Eric Zuniga.

Woman was driving an Infiniti SUV southbound on North Vincent Road with a teenage passenger. For unknown reasons, her vehicle traveled off the road shoulder. The driver appears to have over-corrected, causing the vehicle to travel into the northbound lane where it struck a Chevrolet Cruze head-on, CHP said.

Zuniga said the collision caused the Chevrolet to catch fire, which was extinguished by firefighters. The adult male driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three teenage passengers in the Chevrolet, as well as the driver and passenger in the Infiniti, all suffered major injuries in the collision and were flown to area hospitals for treatment.

According to the CHP, neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as a factors in the collision, which remains under investigation.

Authorities remained at the scene Tuesday morning and North Vincent road is closed between West Harding Road and Linwood Road, according to Zuniga.

The closure is expected to last about an hour.
