One person killed, three others injured in vehicle crash in Fruitland Park

FRUITLAND PARK − One person was killed and three people were taken by helicopter to area hospitals on Saturday after a vehicle collision on U.S. 27/441 near Miller Street, police said.

The crash happened about 4 p.m.

The crash turned a black car into a cube of broken glass and smashed metal. It rolled to a stop in the southbound lane.

Lake County firefighters had to use saws, the “jaws of life” hydraulic pry equipment and other gear to free injured people in a white car that ended up sitting sideways in the northbound lane.

Traffic was blocked and diverted to side streets for hours.

Social media was abuzz with talk of a police chase.

“We are handling this crash and we are being told the subject was fleeing police during this crash,” Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Channing Taylor told the Daily Commercial in an email at 9:24 p.m. Saturday “I am still obtaining information on this and will pass it along shortly.”
