1 person suffering from life-threatening injuries after incident at Carowinds Camp

One person is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after an incident at Carowinds in south Charlotte.

Originally, MEDIC reported the incident as a shooting that took place around 4 a.m. Saturday morning on the 1400 block of Carowinds Boulevard.

A spokesperson for Carowinds told Channel 9 that CMPD did not find evidence of a shooting, but MEDIC confirmed one person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

“At approximately 4:15 AM, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to an altercation at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds. Following an investigation, law enforcement authorities have confirmed that there was no evidence of a shooting,” Carowinds released in a statement.

Channel 9 veteran crime reporter Glenn Counts was able to speak with friends and experienced campers, Cal Austin and Colby Bryan. While the two have never stayed at the Carowinds, they say Saturday morning’s incident is far from normal.

“Usually you see more people getting along and making friends with one another,” Bryan said. “I’ve never seen anyone yell or scream or anything like that.”

Austin told Counts that throughout his camping experiences, he hasn’t really seen anyone get into a disagreement at the campground.

“I haven’t really; I can’t even imagine many things to be argued about,” Austin said.

CMPD detectives have investigated the incident but have not released the cause of the violence or whether an arrest has been made.
