One trucker dead, another wounded in bizarre shooting incident

A 911 call to the Hardeman County Sheriff's Office early Friday started a chain of events that led to law officers shooting the driver of an 18-wheeler.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, about 6:50 a.m. the 911 caller said his co-driver in a truck had shot him. The caller was traveling south on U.S. 287 east of Quanah.

Hardeman County deputies made contact with an 18-wheeler, which evaded officers as it traveled south on US 287.

The DPS said the truck driver continued to evade law enforcement for about 10 miles, then stopped, got out of the rig and fired several shots at law officers. Officers returned fire and the driver was killed. 

The man who called 911 was airlifted from the scene with life-threatening injuries.

Agencies involved in the incident were the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office, Wilbarger County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety, Texas Game Wardens and Chillicothe Police Department. Texas Rangers are investigating.

U.S. 287 was closed until further notice.
