One Ukrainian confirmed killed during attack in Jerusalem, reports embassy

“With sorrow we inform that a Ukrainian citizen was among the innocent victims,” the embassy wrote.

“Our deep condolences to the families of the deceased and we pray for the full recovery of the wounded.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the victims of the attack in Jerusalem.

“We share the pain of the people (of Israel) due to the terrorist attacks in Jerusalem,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Among the victims is a Ukrainian woman. Sincere condolences to the families of the victims. The crimes were cynically committed, in particular, on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Terror should have no place in today’s world. Neither in Israel nor in Ukraine.”

On Jan. 27, a 21-year-old Palestinian was reported to have shot and killed seven people in a synagogue in East Jerusalem around 8:15 p.m. local time. Another ten people were injured. The attack occurred when people were leaving a synagogue. The attacker tried to escape in a car, but was killed by law enforcement during the ensuing pursuit.

Israeli law enforcement stated that 42 people have been detained as part of the investigation into the attack.

While no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, a spokesperson for Hamas, a Palestinian organization that controls the Gaza Strip, stated that the attack was “a response to the crime conducted by the occupation in Jenin and a natural response to the occupation’s criminal actions,” referring to a raid by Israeli military forces on Jan. 27 that killed nine Palestinians in the city of Jenin.
