One of Walgreens stores in Gardner is closing - what customers need to know

One of the two Walgreens locations in Gardner is closing.

The store in the Gardner Plaza on Pearson Boulevard will shut its doors for good at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, according to a notice posted on the location’s door.

“When faced with the difficult decision to close a location, several factors are taken into account, including our existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market, and changes in the buying habits of our patients and customers, among other reasons,” said Jennifer Cotto, a spokesperson for the company.

A Walgreens store on Lincoln Street in Worcester, one of six stores in that city, closed in November.

The Walgreens location at 232 Main St. in Gardner will remain open, the company said.

Cotto said customers of the store’s Gardner Plaza location would not have to take any actions to have their prescriptions transferred to the Main Street store.

“Prescription files automatically transfer to the nearest Walgreens (or Duane Reade),” she said. “Patients receive notice of the transfer through mail and other means to provide details about continued access to their prescriptions and health and wellness services.”

Every effort will be made to retain employees impacted by the closure by moving them to other locations, she added.

In 2023, the company announced plans to close 150 of its locations in the U.S. and eliminate over 500 positions as part of an ongoing cost-saving initiative.
