Oneida County is giving away drug disposal bags. Here's how to use them

Oneida County residents can pick up free medication disposal bags during giveaway sessions at local Kinney Drugs stores this winter and can also request bags to be delivered to their home.

Deterra Drug Deactivation bags help residents safely remove unused or expired prescription medications from their homes and reduces the chance of accidental or intentional misuse, the county said.

The bags can be used for pills, patches, liquids, creams and films.

How it works

Using an active-carbon technology, the medication is deactivated by warm water.

Users deactivate the drugs by putting them in a Deterra bag, adding water and shaking the bag. They can then be thrown away in the trash.

  • Jan. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., 2 Preston St. in Camden

Medication drop-off kiosks are also being installed at Kinney stores across the state.

Oneida County will also mail two free drug disposal bags directly to residents. Request bags through the online submission form at ocopioidtaskforce.org/medication-disposal/.

“The distribution of these medication disposal bags supports the work of addiction prevention by removing the risk from homes," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said in a statement, "since many people who misused prescription medicine for the first time got it from a friend or relative.”
