The Ones: Melvoni’s “Memories”

The must-hear rap song of the day

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Melvoni - “Memories

Did we really need another teenage rapper from Brooklyn singing his heart out over cheap sounding acoustic guitars? The answer is definitely no. And Melvoni strumming in the “Memories” music video like he was performing on “The Voice,” hoping that all the middle America grandparents watching give him their vote, didn’t make me think otherwise. But through his vocal range, reflective lyrics about his upbringing, and distinct Brooklyn confidence, Melvoni turned what should have been a trend chasing mess into the charming “Memories.”

At only 15-years-old Melvoni’s experience is limited, yet he’s still aware of moments where he went wrong as he tells his story: “Momma told me read a book, but I rather/Stand up and pose with guns on camera.” Melvoni’s songwriting is compelling because of the relatability when he speaks to the grind New York raised kids face: “We came a long way from selling candy to selling weed in the hallway.” His voice will be endlessly compared to his affiliate Lil Tjay, though he reaches notes that Tjay has yet to test. It’s only a matter of time until “Memories” is playing from every Bluetooth speaker as New York City high schools dismiss.
