The Ones: Wasteey Monroe’s “Flip Phone”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Wasteey Monroe - “Flip Phone”

The production is the first thing you notice on “Flip Phone,” a recent single from Dallas-based rapper Wasteey Monroe. Backed up by what sounds like church bells, Wasteey raps at hyperspeed, ramming lines into each other with ferocity: “Might give you a lot but won’t go back to little/It was in your bank account I heard it was little.” He strikes with agility, and he doesn’t let up till the song ends, revealing the source of its sample—an obscure record by jazz pianist Joe Bonner, who played on a few of Pharoah Sanders’ albums—in its concluding notes. It’s a heady mixture of extravagance and efficiency from a new talent.
