Yes, you read that right.

Online retailer, Wish, recently posted a dress on their website that was labelled, “Fat Lady Vintage Sexy Evening Dress Printing Patchwork Maxi Dress Party Dress Floor Length A-line Condole Belt.”

A mouthful, yes. But the real issue is that it’s not the only “fat lady” item they sell.

If you type “fat lady” into the search bar on the site, you get dozens of matches, including plastic body wraps to help you “burn” cellulite and fat, compression arm bands used to slim down triceps, a variety of plus-sized dress and this skinny-model-in-fat-pants gem.

While some may feel liberated by calling themselves “fat,” for others, the term can be extremely hurtful and damaging.

In Wish’s defence, some have suggested that the labelling may be a simple case of lost in translation, as the bulk of the company’s inventory comes from China. Even still, it seems crazy that a retailer would take such a huge risk in an time when fat-shaming has become such a hot topic.
