What did you miss?

Victoria Coren Mitchell admitted the Only Connect's final questions were "utterly preposterous" when it aired on Monday.

Viewers love the game show's notoriously tough questions and it's no surprise the questions in the final were particularly puzzling. The game show's host admitted when she was watching the final back that the questions could be "utterly preposterous" - sparking a huge reaction online.

As the episode aired, she tweeted on social media platform X: "Morse feet! Sometimes, just occasionally, I actually watch an episode of this show. And then it strikes me afresh how utterly preposterous our questions really are. Only Connect."

What, how and why?

Mitchell was specifically referring to a question in the connections round where the answer was morse feet - that left both of the teams clueless.

They were presented with the sequence: Dactyl = D, Anapest = U, Trochee = N and lamb = A. However, neither teams were able to work out the answer and it left quiz host Mitchell to explain the answer to them and the viewers at home.

She explained to the teams: "A dactyl for example it's where you have one stressed syllable and two unstressed syllable. Half a league, half a league, half a league, onward. If you translate that into morse code it's dash dot dot, dash dot dot. Dash dot dot would be a D. Anapest a U. It's dot dot dash."

She finished: "It's morse feet!"

Social media was in agreement with the quiz host that in fact it was a "bonkers question". Among the sea of comments, one person wrote: "I have no idea, how anyone in the world could have got Morse Feet right. To put it into context, when University Challenge came on, my son said "Great, now for something easier". Really enjoy Only Connect though."

Others added: "We literally howled - was that the 'metres of a poem tapped out in morse' one? Well, I howled. He shouted at the telly in disgust. Whatever next? Take the first and last letters of these composers and vowels of these Canadian towns and they're all flavours of Angel Delight?"

"Toughest quiz ever! Who understood Morse Feet? Beyond me even when explained! Got nowt on missing vowels usually my best round! Magnificent teams! Congratulations to both!"

"Didn't understand a couple of the questions tonight... But did get a connection on the wall before the contestants..."

"But you've no idea how deliriously happy it made me to get that one, even though I guessed at Morse!"

"Last night I didn't even understand the explanations to answers for two questions. Loved it."

"They are indeed absolutely preposterous (esp that Morse feet one)! And even more ridiculous is that the contestants can often work them out! When, v occasionally, I manage to get an OC question right, gosh what a dizzying sense of triumph!"

"This question made me feel just the same way as when I found out that the theme to Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em was in fact Morse code..."

"Morse feet was the absolute belter from tonight’s show." Another added: "Not since this have questions puzzled so much."

"Brilliant question and final. I was very happy to get the john Travolta film dances question right."

What else happened on Only Connect?

The Thrifters - Will Chadwick, Sam Haywood and Jack Karimi - won the final with only one point difference from their opposition the Also Rans - Harry Heath, Dan Afshar and Claire Barrow.

Mitchell shared she was impressed with both teams when she handed the trophy to the winning team who had 19 points. She told them: "There's a one point difference. That means you all deserve this trophy, you've all been brilliant."
