Watch moment Only Connect viewers say there is a 'wrong answer' in semi-final

What did you miss?

Only Connect viewers have called out what they believe was a wrong answer in the semi-final of the notoriously tough BBC quiz.

Host Victoria Coren Mitchell explained the complicated connection between Harry Potter and In Bruges actors to the two teams in Monday's episode - but viewers said the answer contained some serious flaws.

What, how, and why?

Only Connect is known for being one of the toughest quiz shows on TV, but in a rare moment on Monday evening, viewers not only knew the right answer — they also managed to spot an error in the one given to teams.

Presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell posed a typically confusing question in round one of the BBC Two show's semi-final.

The question involved finding the connection between four clues: "Grindelwald is the younger of the two main characters," "Fleur Delacour dates Grindelwald," "Mad-Eye Moody is the older of the main characters," and "Lord Voldermort is the boss of Grindelwald and Mad-Eye Moody".

Teams the Thrifters and the Suncatchers tried to guess at what the connection could be, both realising that they were about Harry Potter characters, but failed to get the answer as Coren Mitchell revealed that it was "Wizarding World actors in Bruges".

But viewers with knowledge of Harry Potter quickly flagged up what they believed was a wrong answer — something that barely ever happens in Only Connect. Social media was awash with people complaining about the question and answer.

One viewer commented on X: "Nah, #onlyconnect, that Grindelwald question is b******s. Colin Farrell plays a disguised version in one film and has a different character name. Also Grindelwald is so played by Johnny Depp and Mads Mikkelsen. And I'm not even a fan, those films are trash."

Someone else replied: "Haha. That’s exactly what I said. Technically Colin Farrell is does not play Grindelwald. It’s Johnny Depp or Mads Michelson. Question is wrong."

Another viewer wrote on social media: "The Harry Potter/In Bruges question on #onlyconnect would’ve been clever if Colin Farrell had actually played Grindelwald? But he didn’t." More people weighed into the conversation with one person writing on their social media account: "Colin Farell never played Grindlewald though."

However, others pointed out that while Colin Farrell plays Percival Graves in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Grindelwald spends much of the film disguised as Graves so the answer could be correct. One fan added: "Real contender for one of my favourite ever #OnlyConnect questions! Beautiful crossover."

Monday's episode was the first semi-final of the series and saw the Thrifters make it through to the final, while the Suncatchers go on to the third place play offs.

It was a tense final round, as after the anagrams questions both teams were tied on 20 points - taking the semi-final to a tie-break where only the team captains were allowed to answer. The next semi-final will decide who goes ahead to play in the series 19 grand final which will air later this month.

Only Connect airs on BBC Two at 8pm on Mondays.
