'Only fire awaits you' - families address NZ shooter
More victims' families came face to face with Christchurch mosque shooter Brenton Tarrant on Wednesday (August 26).
The white supremacist pleaded guilty to 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and one charge of committing a terrorist act during the 2019 shooting rampage which he livestreamed on Facebook.
This was Jibran Safi, son of victim Matiullah Safi:
"I don't know how this justice system will deal with you, but I have peace knowing in the hereafter, you'll get what you deserve by the rule of the almighty, Allah. Takbir, Allahu akbar. Takbir, Allahu akbar."
Ahad Nabi, who lost his elderly father in the attack demanded that Tarrant should "never walk free" for his cowardly actions.
"You are now in hell and only the fire awaits you. But you are weak, a sheep with a wolf's jacket on for only ten minutes of your whole life."
The daughter of victim Abdelfattah Qasem, Sara Qasem.
"And I wish more than anything in the world that I could have been there to hold his hand and tell him that it would all be ok. But I couldn't do that"
A murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
The judge can impose a life term without parole, a sentence that has never been used in New Zealand.
