The only Met to receive 2020 MVP votes is excited for the Steve Cohen era

Count Dom Smith among Steve Cohen’s growing fanbase.

Smith didn’t watch the whole press conference — he’s in Los Angeles, busy organizing his organization’s Baseball Generations charity tournament. But he told the Daily News over the phone he was encouraged by everything he’s heard from Cohen’s introductionary presser. “Having an owner come in like that and say some pretty demanding things, and have high hopes for the organization the way he does, is definitely just a great sign.”

“You just want to pretty much work and give him everything he wants,” Smith said. “And he wants to win the World Series in the near future, that’s definitely a goal of everybody on this 25 man roster.” (Cohen said on Tuesday that he wanted a ring within the next three to five years.)

Now, the young first baseman was unlikely to slam his boss on his first day — stars, they’re just like us! — but his posture resembled the good vibes felt across the Mets fanbase. Marcus Stroman was effusive in his praise after confirming he accepted the Mets QO, and Noah Syndergaard changed his Twitter account with an open letter telling the hedge fund titan that “I just want to win for Mets fans just like you.”

In NL MVP voting revealed Thursday night, Smith finished 13th, with eight voters ranking him between 8th and 10th on their ballots. He was the only Met to receive any votes. Unsurprisingly, Smith endorsed Cohen’s timeline, saying the Mets are just short “a few pieces here and there.”

“If you look at the talent on the roster, over the last several years, we have a roster that definitely can do some things,” Smith said. “A lot of our team — we’ve done a ton of self-evaluations, and we were all going back to the drawing board. So to have a team that motivated going into (the) offseason, we can do just about anything.”
