Only Murders in the Building actors Martin Short and Meryl Streep have denied they are dating, despite online whispers.

The duo worked together on season 3 of the mystery-comedy as Oliver Putnam and Loretta Durkin, who are romantically drawn to one another, but TMZ now reports that such feelings are not based on reality.

A representative for Short told the publication that he and Streep are "just very good friends – nothing more", after they were allegedly spotted looking cosy at last weekend's Golden Globe awards ceremony.

Three-time Oscar-winning actress Streep (Mamma Mia) was previously married to Don Gummer from 1978 to 2017, while Mars Attacks! star Short lost his late wife Nancy Dolman to ovarian cancer in 2010.

In a statement issued to Page Six in October 2023, a spokesperson for Streep revealed: "Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

Following a more widespread season 3 of Only Murders, co-creator John Hoffman has promised fans that the central sleuthing trio of Oliver, Charles and Mabel will be back together in the fourth instalment.

"The room where we are now, having earned this understanding of themselves and what the trio means to them, feels like a great springboard into next season where they are back together fully on the case – and for good reason, because it feels pretty close to home," he said.

"As creative people, these three have made a podcast, and they put it out into the world and it's taken off. But there's no real sense of what people out there are thinking about your thing that is taking off, and that thing you created could come back in a way that feels threatening and unexpected for you.

"Be careful with the thing you create, basically."

Only Murders in the Building is available to watch on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.
