Only one California metro will be among most populated US cities in 2100, study predicts

A study conducted by moveBuddha, a technology company that helps people relocate, showed an estimated top 25 most populated cities in 2100 based on current migration data.

While 2022 data for California’s population has shown a decline, three Californian cities were among the metros listed by moveBuddha, including one in seventh place.

Only one metro made the top 10 and Texas will seemingly kick Los Angeles down the list.

Using data collected from the U.S. Census Bureau from 2010 to 2020, moveBuddha made its list based on U.S. cities with more that 250,000 residents and their projected growth rates for 2100.

California’s most populated areas in 2100

Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim ranked No. 7 on moveBuddha’s list. According to the study, the area had about a 2.1%, 10-year growth rate between 2010 and 2020. By 2100, the area is predicated to have a population of approximately 15.5 million people.

Riverside-San Bernadino-Ontario ranked No. 16 on the list of most populated cities in the country. The study shows that the area had about a 10.3%, 10-year growth rate between 2010 and 2020. In 2100, the area is estimated to have a population of 10.2 million people.

San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley ranked No. 19 on the list. The study shows that the area’s population had a growth rate of about 8.1% from 2010 to 2020. By the start of the next century, the area is predicted to have a population of about 8.8 million.

What other U.S. cities made the list?

Overall, the study shows Texas will have the top three largest cities in the country by 2100.

“The future of America may lie in Texas,” the study states. “Based on current migration trends, moveBuddha predicts that by 2100, Dallas, Houston, and Austin will replace NYC, LA, and Chicago as the country’s most populous cities.”

Here are the estimated top 10 most populated U.S. cities in 2100 and their predicted populations:
