Only one Teaneck school board incumbent running among a field of six

TEANECK — Six candidates have filed to run for the three open seats on the Board of Education in November's general election.

Though it is only half of the 12 candidates who ran in last year's crowded school board race for five seats, the contested field suggests opinions still differ on the future direction of the board.

Trustee Nadia Hosein is the only Board of Education incumbent seeking reelection. Board President Sebastian Rodriguez and trustee Denise Sanders ran for one-year terms last year, and as pledged at the time, they did not file for new terms, creating two open seats.

David Gruber is the only 2022 candidate who filed again for this year's race. Other candidates are Seleene Raquel Wong, James Wolff, Gerald B. Kirshenbaum and Jose Zenon.

None of the candidates filed with slogans or submitted platforms to NorthJersey.com and The Record indicating their particular concerns or issues.

Last November's race centered on the controversial June departure of Schools Superintendent Christopher Irving and a pledge by three incumbent candidates to choose his successor before their terms ended in December.

While residents questioned the board's actions in hiring and renewing Irving's contract, the incumbents won reelection as part of a five-person "Achieving Excellence Together" slate. They promptly approved the hiring of Texas schools chief Andre Spencer to the post in December.

Spencer's term has been comparatively quiet, with the possible exception of protests over an eight-teacher furlough this spring for budgetary reasons.
