There’s really only one or two movies in 2021 that could compete with Dune as the most anticipated movie of the year. One of those is Spider-Man: No Way Home (and the other is easily The Matrix: Resurrections). The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken over our lives, for better or worse, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

As the third movie in this iteration of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, there’s a lot on the line. It also marks the third solo film with actor Tom Holland, who, between his three solo Spidey films, two Avengers films, and debut in Captain America: Civil War, has already appeared more times as Peter Parker than movies starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield combined.

No Way Home is Spider-Man’s first appearance in the Phase 4 of the MCU, which so far has included Black Widow and also introduced a set of new heroes in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals. And that’s not to mention the set-ups made in Marvel’s television series like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Hawkeye, and Loki. Oh, and since Doctor Strange features heavily in the trailer, we’re probably getting a multiverse Marvel storyline that’ll impact every other character in the universe too, whether they’re in the film or not (and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be the MCU's first 2022 cinematic venture, due for release next May).

Plus, since the film is technically a Sony property, there’s potential overlap with non-MCU characters too, like Venom and the upcoming Morbius, who both interact with Spider-Man in the comics. That’s all to say, the movie is a really, really big deal. In addition to who officially has been announced in the film, there’s still speculation about if fans will see other MCU characters (or if Maguire and/or Garfield could be convinced to make appearances).

Since it’s one of Sony/Marvel’s biggest releases of 2021, it’s safe to say they want as much box office cash as possible. Spider-Man: No Way Home is only possible to view in theaters for now. No Disney+, HBOMax, or any other big name streaming platform plans to host the movie in the near future.

According to RadioTimes, Sony’s other major Marvel adaptation Venom: Let There Be Carnage was available to rent through streaming services six weeks after its initial theatrical release. So, with any luck, Spider-Man: No Way Home will have a similar fate.
